Sometimes...

...sometimes you make big steps like an elephant...sometimes just tiny steps like a mouse...

In other words - I've completed another block of the Designer Mystery BoM.

I substituted the 11th block with a block from the Vintage Memories BoM. The original Block by Debbie Beaves, "Swing Your Partner Star", though I really don't believe it to be intended, reminded me somehow of a swa***ka. I just couldn't bring myself to piece that...but I really like the substitute. 

Funny: Although I knew my friend Monika had done the same, I didn't recall which block she had chosen...after auditioning my BoM block collection I decided on the #1 block...coincidentially the same block she did!

I'll remember this block as 'Monica's Choice'  ;o)

Mit anderen Worten - ich habe einen weiteren Designer Mystery Block fertig.

Allerdings habe ich den 11. Block mit einem Muster des Vintage Memories ersetzt. Der eigentlich Block von Debbie Beaves, "Swing your Partner Star", hat mich einfach zu sehr - wobei sicherlich nicht beabsichtigt - an das Swa***ka-Symbol. Das wollte ich nun wirklich nicht in meinem Quilt haben....ich mag das Resultat!

Netter Zufall am Rande: Obwohl ich natürlich weiß, dass meine liebe Freundin Monika das gleiche mit ihrem Block 11 gemacht hatt, wusste ich nicht mehr genau, mit welchem Block sie den ursprünglichen ersetzt hat...naja, nach langem Suchen und testen hatte ich mich dann für Block #1 entschieden...zufälligerweise genau den, den sie auch ausgesucht hatte!

Der Block wird mir wohl als 'Monikas Wahl' in Erinnerung bleiben ;o)

What do you really need?

No - I don't want to start a serious discussion about the things in life we do or don't need ~ I think about things you need for patchwork/quilting..

Surely, all you probably need for quilting is some fabric, a threaded needle and scissors...but I admit I am not that minimalistic. I rather like to have my little helpers around me that make pursuing my hobby fun.

Was braucht man wirklich?

Nein - ich möchte hier keine ernsthafte Diskussion über die Dinge, die wir tatsächlich...oder eben nicht zum Leben brauchen, anfangen. Ich dachte eher an die Dinge, die Ihr für's Patchworken und Quilten benötigt...

Natürlich, wirklich brauchen tut man wahrscheinlich ledliglich etwas Stoff, Nadel und Faden und eine Schere...ich gebe aber zu, dass ich nicht so minimalistisch veranlagt bin. I habe gerne meine kleinen Helfer um mich herum, mit denen mir die Ausübung meines Hobbys noch mehr Spaß macht.

What kind of seam rippers do you have?

I own two seam rippers ~ the first one came along with my Bernina and...well, it did work, but not very well. Besides, it was a real pain to hold it longer.

To be honest, in my early days a quilter I often refrained from ripping out the seams because I not only didn't like doing it, but also was afraid of the pain it caused me... No need to tell you, that the result were less than optimal matching seams incorporated in my quilts ;o). 

Welche Nahttrenner besitzt Ihr?

Ich nenne zwei Nahttrenner mein Eigen ~ der erste kam zusammen mit meiner Bernina und...naja, er sieht aus wie ein Nahttrenner, fühlt sich an wie ein Nahttrenner und schmeckt wie ein Nahttrenner (okay, das behaupte ich jetzt einfach mal so). Er hat seine Arbeit gemacht, mehr schlecht als recht. Das ist auch der Grund, warum ich mich in meinen Anfängen als Quilterin oft gegen das Trennen entschieden habe, obwohl es mehr als angebracht gewesen wäre. Ich mochte nicht nur das "Rückwärtsnähen" an sich nicht besonders, dazu kam, dass ich nach ein paar Nähten schon tierische Hand/Handgelenkschmerzen bekam...naja, ich brauche wohl nicht exta zu erwähnen, dass das Ergebnis sehr viele verrutschte Nähte waren, die schließlich in meinen Quilts landeten.

When I got the Fons & Porter Ergonomic Seam Ripper this changed quite a bit!

It lies well in the hand...and I can rip out many seams before my hand gets sore.And what a difference! It was so sharp that I didn't have to pull at the seams.I now have this one since about two years. Seam ripping is getting harder as the blade has gotten dull over the time and it's time to get a new one.

Als ich dann den ergonomischen Nahttrenner von Fons & Porter bekam, hat sich das ganz schön geändert!

Er liegt gut in der hand...und ich kann damit jede Menge Nähte "entnähen", bevor meine Hand ermüdet. Was für ein Unterschied! Er war so scharf, dass ich gar nicht mehr an den Nähten herumzuppeln musste. Allerdings habe ich den Trenner jetzt schon etwa zwei Jahre und das Trennen geht zunehmend schwerer, da die Klinge langsam stumpf wird ~ es wird wohl Zeit, sich einen neuen zuzulegen.

Stash Manicure Backstage Report III ~ Spinning Star

Recently, I bought some templates for Apple Core and Spinning Star from a German online shop, Patchworkshablonen, which is specialised in patchwork templates (until now, only with 0,75 cm seam allowance, no imperial dimensions). Their service was outstanding, within a very few days I had the templates at home which are great! Although not coated or something like that they have a good grip on fabric and don't slip too easily!

Although many other projects called my attention & although I didn't want to start yet another project, I just HAD to try one of the charm templates...

 

Vor kurzem, angeregt durch einen Thread bei den Quiltfriends, habe ich bei Patchworkshablonen.de ein paar Plastik-Templates bestellt. Der Service war super, falls Ihr also darüber nachdenkt, Euch Schablonen zuzulegen, schaut unbedingt dort vorbei - innerhalb weniger Tage waren die Schablonen für Apple Core (Apfelbutzen) und Spinning Star (Sternenwirbel) bei mir zu Hause, die ich wirklich klasse finde! Obwohl sie nicht extra beschichtet sind, haben sie eine ziemlich gute Haftung auf dem Stoff und verrutschen nicht so leicht.

Obwohl ich eigentlich mit anderen Projekten gut beschäftigt bin & ich eigentlich auch kein neues Projekt anfangen möchte, konnte ich nicht anders und ich musste eine der Schablonen ausprobieren...

 

The 12.5 cm Spinning Star template was perfect for leftover charm squares - there's only little waste, and even some 1" strips for my Log Cabin box...

Der 12,5 cm Sternenwirbel ist prima für übriggebliebene Charm Squares - es bleibt nur wenig Stoffverschnitt übrig und ein Teil kann in 1"-Streifen für meine Log Cabin Box verwandelt werden...

 

Handpiecing was quite easy, although I am absolutely not used to it...but piecing by machine was easy as well!

Das Handnähen hat ganz gut geklappt, obwohl ich darin völlig ungeübt bin...aber auch das Zusammennähen mit der Maschine war ziemlich einfach!

The first attempt became a pincushion, filled with polyester fibers and rice, embellished with a matching covered button...

Aus dem ersten Versuch wurde ein kleines Nadelkissen, gefüllt mit Reis und Füllwatte und versehen mit einem passend bezogenen Knopf...

 The reason I bought the templates at first, was, that I wanted to use them for my vintage sheets...

You know, I am a copy cat - last year I've seen a beautiful Apple Core quilt, that I never got out of my mind... Still need some darker fabrics to add to my sheets, but I am not in a hurry with this quilt ;o).

Der Grund, warum ich die Schablonen überhaupt gekauft hatte, war, dass ich sie für die antiken Bettlaken verwenden wollte...

Ich hab meine Ideen ja immer von irgendwoher geklaut - letztes Jahr habe ich einen wunderschönen Apple Core Quilt aus alten Stoffen gesehen, der mir nie ganz aus dem Kopf ging... Ich benötige noch ein paar dunklere Stoffe, aber ich habe es ja nicht eilig ;o).

Stash Manicure Backstage Report II ~ Selvedges

I must confess that I am not much a fan of string quilts (at least those where the strips have random widths). That doesn't prevent me from keeping all those beautiful selvedges...

Ich gebe zu, dass ich nicht sooo ein Fan von String Quilts bin (zumindest nicht von solchen, bei denen die Streifen eine zufällige Breite haben). Das hält mich aber nicht davon ab, die Webkanten meiner Stoffe zu sammeln...

Especially the selvedges of fabric by French General are too wide to simply throw away. There are plenty of ideas on how to use the selvedge strips with the printing on it. But what to do with the other side, the neglected sibling that doesn't get much attention?

I decided to make a bag using these...because I didn't want the result to scream *selvedges*.

 Speziell die Webkanten der French General Stoffe sind erstens zu breit und zweitens zu schön, um sich einfach wegzuwerfen. Natürlich gibt es im Netz schon tausende Ideen, die Webkanten mit den Farbcodes und Stoffbezeichnungen zu verwenden. Aber was wird aus der anderen, nicht bedruckten Seite?
Ich habe mir gedacht, eine Tasche wäre gar nicht schlecht...eine, die nicht direkt *Webkanten* schreit.

 First I sewed the strips on a foundation. As I didn't want to wast the 'good' fabric, I also used a leftover scrap of fabric, pieced to fit the size.

Zunächst habe ich die Webkanten auf einen Stoff genäht. Da ich hierfür nicht meinen 'guten' Stoff verwenden wollte, habe ich dafür auch Reste verwendet, die ich auf die richtige Größe gestückelt habe.

 I didn't have a plan for the bag ~ I 'designed' it on the go. First thing was, that I didn't want to have a all over strip design; I wanted the eyes to have a focus and a point to rest on. So I added some beige woven fabric to the sides and two pleats. Then I drew the bag shape (freehand) on freezer paper and cut the pieces accordingly. Same for the lining.

Ich habe keinen Plan für die Tasche gehabt ~ und sie im Entstehen 'designed'. Da ich nicht NUR Streifen haben wollte, habe ich an beide Seiten einen beigen Webstoff schräg an die Seiten genäht und dazu zwei Plisseefalten eingearbeitet. Dann habe ich die Taschenform freihand auf Freezer Paper gezeichnet und diese dann für die Außenseite, das Kontrastband und das Futter geschnitten.

 Natürlich gibt es eine kleine Innentasche (auch aus den Webkanten genäht) und einen Haken für meinen Schlüssel...ich 'verliere' den so gerne in meinen Taschen.

After sewing the outer panels and the inner pocket, I still had some strips leftover...so I pieced some of them together (lengthwise and then on the short side), to form the handle.

Nach dem Nähen der Außenteile und der kleinen Tasche hatte ich immer noch ein paar Webkanten übrig, so dass ich einige davon genäht habe (erst über die Länge, dann an den kurzen Enden), um daraus den Griff zu basteln.

The border was printed wavy, but I think I like the result...

Der Druck der Webkante ist etwas wellig, aber ich glaube, dass ich mit das Ergebnis ganz gut finde...

All in all, I am somewhat content with the result, even though I know there are many points which I must improve (the band, the overall form, the darts...), but for my first attempt it's okay I think.

For the records - it's my second finish for August's OPAM challenge ;o). 

 Insgesamt bin ich einigermaßen zufrieden mit dem Resultat, obwohl noch einiges verbessert werden muss (das obere Band, die Form, die Abnäher am Boden...), aber für einen ersten Versuch ist das schon ganz ok, denke ich. 

Für's Protokoll - das ist mein zweites 'Finish' für die OPAM-Challenge im August ;o)

I've just read Donna's (Chookyblue.......) post about the new 'Comment' feature in blogger. Thank you, Donna, for pointing it out, I wouldn't have seen it otherwise!

Of course I had to check it out on my blog and then I realized that there were some comments that needed moderation (because I had set the settings to 'moderate comments on posts older than XY days'). Usually I get an e-mail once a comment is posted. I thought it would be the same with comments for those older post. Wrong!

There were 7 of them which I hadn't seen before... I immediately published them... and I'll answer them all {if there's an e-mail to send the answer to}. Now. Promised!
