Friday Fabric Focus - A solid love for solids

I interrupt the 'special Stash Manicure series' for a regular Friday Fabric Focus post ~ tomorrow I'll continue the 'special series' ;o).

Ich unterbreche die 'außerordentliche Stash Manicure-Serie' mit einem regulären Friday Fabric Focus Eintrag ~ morgen geht's mit den 'Sondermeldungen' weiter ;o).

{normalerweise ist das doch genau umgekehrt!? ;o)}

{oh, I bet now I'll get a lot of nasty spam...but couldn't resist ;o)}

No? I LOVE printed fabrics...can't sop drooling over the printed fabrics in my stash, in online stores, on the fabric manufacturer's websites...

But then, there's my love for SOLIDS. I don't have many of them because I mostly buy them when I use them up in the next project...the good thing with solids is, that I don't have to fear them to be out of print when I NEEED them...they're there. The reliable, the trusted, the SOLID relationship...whereas prints are more an exciting affair, an exciting affair, but often never meant for eternity (to stick with my jolty metaphor).

{oha, hoffentlich führt das nicht zu jeder Menge Spam...;o)}

Nein? Naja, ich LIEBE Prints...kann gar nicht aufhören, meine Stöffchen zu Hause anzuschauen, in Online-Shops zu stöbern oder auf den Seiten der Stoff-Hersteller nach neuen Druckstoffen Ausschau zu halten...

Daneben gibt es aber noch jemanden...UNISTOFFE. Zugegebenermaßen besitze ich nicht allzuviele in meinem Fundus, da ich sie meist bei akutem Bedarf kaufe....das beste an Solids ist, dass ich keine Angst haben muss, dass sie nicht mehr zu bekommen sind, wenn ich sie brauche....sie sind einfach da. Sie sind quasi der verlässliche, stete Freund und Partner...während Druckstoffe eher aufregende Affairen sind, die oft nicht für die Ewigkeit gemacht sind (um mal bei meiner holprigen Metapher zu bleiben).

Buying fabric online works out fine in 9 out of 10 times...but occasionally there are those mispurchases. And in most of the cases it involves solids.

The colors shown on my display aren't justified. And you can't always rely on the scans of fabrics the stores provide. I learned it the hard way with a Kona Cotton solid bundle I bought at Hancock's (it didn't help that they gave the bundle another name...if I had known that it was the 'poseidon' bundle I'd probably never bought their 'ocean' fat quarter bundle... (btw, on the R. Kaufman site there's the same overexposed picture of it)

So after having purchased just the wrong shade of a color one time too often I decided to invest in color cards. If you love solids - don't go, RUN to the next retailer that offers color cards of your favourite solids!

In 9 von 10 Fällen funktionieren online Stoffkäufe problemlos...aber ab und zu gibt es natürlich Fehlkäufe.

Und in den meisten dieser Fälle sind Unistoffe involviert.

Die Farben meines Displays sind nicht justiert. Und kann man sich nicht immer auf die eingescannten (o. ä.) Bilder der Shops verlassen. I habe mehr als einmal Lehrgeld bezahlen müssen. Zum Beispiel als ich bei Hancock's ein Fat Quarter Bundle 'ocean' bestellt habe, dass sich letztendlich als 'poseidon' entpuppte (auf der Seite von R. Kaufman ist übrigens dasselbe überbelichtete Bild zu sehen).

Nachdem ich also einmal zu viel die genau falsche Farbe bestellt hatte, habe ich beschlossen, in Farbkarten zu investieren. Wenn Ihr Unistoffe mögt - geht nicht, RENNT zum nächsten Laden Eures Vertrauens und besorgt Euch eine solche Karte!

As I like both, Kona Cotton Solids and Moda Bella Solids, I'm the proud owner of the color cards for both collections. The Kona color card is great - not too big & it beautifully showcases 221 colors. When I got it I had to sit down on the sofa, fondling all the fabric swatches and drooling over the names...

Can't wait to make a quilt using 'charcoal'  for sashing...it's a beautiful shade of grey. 

Doesn't matter that I haven't got a clue about the blocks needed ;o).

 Da ich sowohl Kona Cotton Solids als auch Moda Bella Solids sehr gerne mag, bin ich stolze Besitzerin beider Karten. Die Kona-Karte ist toll - nicht zu groß und sie zeigt sehr schön die 221 Farben in einer Stoff-Quadrat-Spirale. Als ich sie bekam, muss ich mich erstmal setzen und die ganzen Farben in mich aufnehmen...und mich über die schönen Namen freuen...

 Ein Quilt mit 'Charcoal' für's Sashing stehtschon auf meiner Liste...ein wunderschönes dunkles Grau.

Macht ja nicht, dass ich noch keine Idee für die Blöcke habe ;o).

The bella solids card features 126 colors, the swatches are bigger and the names are, if possible, even more yummy. The only disadvantage is, that the card is quite big...it didn't fit into a flat rate envelope and the customs wasn't quite cautious with it...

Die Moda Bella Solids-Karte zeigt 126 Farben, die jeweiligen Stoffproben sind um Einiges größer und die Namen sind, sofern überhaupt möglich, noch leckerer. Der einzige Nachteil: sie ist ziemlich groß und passte nicht in einen Flat Rate Envelope - naja, der Zoll war nicht gerade zimperlich mit der Post...

A quilt using solids only is on my top priority list for sure. After finally getting Cherri House's book 'City Quilts' I already have an idea...;o)

Ein Quilt nur mit Solids steht ganz oben auf meiner Liste. Nachdem ich endlich Cherri Houses Buch 'City Quilts' bei mir zu Hause habe, habe ich schon langsam eine Idee, wie dieser Quilt einmal aussehen soll...;o)

Stash Manicure Backstage Report I ~ Pillow Talk

 Some posts ago I told that I found a great way to use my little 1 1/2" scraps making the Stashbuster Block by Little Miss Shabby. 


Vor einer Weile habe ich davon erzählt, dass ich den Stashbuster Block von Little Miss Shabby für meine zahlreichen 1 1/2" Scraps verwenden möchte.

As I had many 1 1/2" squares left over from making Joy Luck (of course I didn't read the instructions carefully and ended up cutting said squares off the rail fence blocks).

A perfect combination which resulted in a matching pillow for my favourite armchair. I am already daydreaming of snuggling up under my quilt, stuffing the pillow behind my back to stitch or to read on a colder autumn evening...;o)

For this pillow I only used scraps: scraps of batting as well as (bigger) scraps of background fabric from various projects. I tried to add piping instead of a binding for contrast, but I'm not satisfied with the outcome...does anyone know a good tutorial for that?

Da ich von meinem Joy Luck Schnibbles noch einige 1 1/2" Quadrate übrig hatte {natürlich habe ich die Anleitung nicht vollständig durchgelesen und musste daher meine Rail Fence Blöcke noch einmal kleiner schneiden}.

Beide zusammen eine super Kombination, die in einem passenden Kissenbezug für meinen Lieblingssel führte. Ich freu mich schon so darauf, mich mit meinem Quilt, das Kissen im Rücken darauf einzukuscheln und an einem kalten Herbstabend zu sticheln oder zu lesen ;o).

Für das Kissen wurden nur Scraps verwendet: für das Vlies genauso wie für die Hintergrundstoffe, die von verschiedenen Projekten übrig waren (Vorder- und Rückseite haben unterschiedlich weiße HG-Stoffe; fällt aber nicht so auf). Ich habe mich, anstatt eines Bindings für den Kontrast, an einer Paspel (ohne Kordelfüllung) versucht...bin aber so gar nicht zufrieden mit dem Ergebnis. Kennt jemand vielleicht ein gutes Tutorial?

 I even incorporated the strips I accidently cut too small for one of the previous quilts for the back...and covered the buttons with scraps of the blue polka dot print.

Ich habe sogar die zu schmalen Streifen, die ich falsch für einen der Quilts zugeschnitten habe, für die Rückseite zu verwenden....die Knöpfe wurden mit Resten des blauen Polka Dot Stoffs bezogen.

I know this won't be the last time I made a Stashbuster Block...! And I think I've acquired a taste for pillows/pillow covers...they're easy and quick to make...instant gratification!
BTW, it's my first August finish - yay!


Das wird garantiert nicht der letzte Stashbuster Block gewesen sein...! Und ich denke, ich bin auf den Geshmack gekommen, Kissen zu nähen....einfach und schnell zu nähen...mit eingebautem schnellen Erfolgserlebnis ;o)!
Oh, es ist übrigens mein erstes 'Finish' für den August - juhuu!

Update on Charming Girl's Club Goals

Just a quick update on my Charming Girl's Club Goals...

I finished sewing on the first frame around the diamonds for the Whimsy Diamonds Table Topper.

A small achievement, but nonetheless another point checked off my list ;o).

Nur eine kleine Meldung über den Fortschritt meiner Charming Girl's Club Ziele...

Ich habe die erste Streifenrunde um die Rauten für den Whimsy Diamonds Table Topper genäht.

Jaa, ein kleiner Fortschritt, aber immerhin ist ein weiterer Punkt von meiner Liste abgehakt ;o). 

ETA:

I completely forgot that there's another first round, or 1st border to announce ~ I decided to piece the first border using only the reds and pinks. I think I like it, it because the dark frame brings the star somewhat to shine... In the next border (quarter triangle squares) I'll use the blues of the collection...

So much fun making this quilt!

I habe völlig vergessen, dass ich noch eine andere erste Runde fertig habe ~ ich habe mich entschieden, die erste 'border' nur mit den roten und rosafarbenen Stoffen zu nähen. Und ich glaube, ich finde das auch ganz gut so, da der etwas dunklere Rahmen den Stern ein bisschen zum 'Leuchten' bringt... Für die nächste Runde (Quarter Triangle Squares) werde ich nur die blauen Stoffe der Kollektion nehmen...

Ich habe richtig viel Spaß mit diesem Quilt!
