Doll Quilt Swap 10 ~ quilt received

You know a Doll Quilt Swap post (series) wouldn't be complete if I didn't show you the quilt I received. And what a quilt I got...I love it so much that I carry it (nearly) everywhere I go - the first evening, after showing it my parents & aunt and uncle who were visiting, I took it to my bedroom. No, I didn't cuddle with it (I could have because it's so beautifully soft!), but to hang it over the bed post so I could see it in the morning :) {I'm a dork, but that's okay!}
I then pinned it to my "studio" wall. Lovely, I think there it will find its final place as soon as I have sewn a tunnel to hang it (for the mug rug the pins are temporarily okay, but not for THE doll quilt).

I could talking like this forever, but I think you'll want to see WHICH quilt of all the wonderful creations made its way to my doorstep, won't you?

As I enjoy anticipation, I first show you what arrived in my home....of course, I can't prevent you from just scrolling down to the picture you want to see...but that way it's nicer...right?
A PINK parcel waited for me, and no, it wasn't an invitation from the Queen to Kate's and Will's wedding *wink*. It was way better!

And guess what!? I knew right away which quilt it was when I read the sender address. But then I didn't allowed me to believe it, because this would be beyond fantastic! The PINK parcel was from a special blog friend in the UK...Lynne (Lily's Quilts).

Ein Post über den Doll Quilt Swap wäre wohl nicht vollständig, wenn ich Euch nicht den Quilt zeigen würde, den ich im Gegenzug bekommen habe.
Und was für ein Quilt...ich trage ihn momentan fast überall mit mir herum (naja, nicht ganz so schlimm wie Linus von den Peanuts, aber im Ansatz kommt das wohl hin) - am ersten Abend habe ich ihn mit zu meinen Eltern genommen und ihn dort auch Tante & Onkel gezeigt, damit sie ihn gebührend bewundern können...und dann mit ins Schlafzimmer, wo ich ihn über den Bettpfosten gehängt habe, damit ich ihn gleich als erstes am Morgen anschauen kann {Ich weiß, ich bin ein bisschen merkwürdig, aber das ist schon okay!}
Dann hab ich ihn für's Foto an meine türkis-blaue Wand gepinnt, und damit auch gleich seinen endgültigen Platz gefunden....allerdings muss ich vorher noch einen Tunnel für die Aufhängung nähen, denn auch wenn Stecknadeln für die temporäre Fixierung von Mug Rugs ganz okay sind, für einen Doll Quilt kommt das überhaupt nicht infrage.
Ich könnte ewig weiter erzählen, aber ich denke mal, Ihr wollt vielleicht wissen WELCHEN der wunderschönen Kreationen den Weg zu mir gefunden hat, oder?
Naja, da ich aber ein ausgesprochener Fan der Vorfreude bin, muss ich Euch erst den PINKEN Umschlag zeigen, der bei mir gelandet ist. Natürlich kann ich niemanden daran hindern, sich das Blabla zu schenken und schnell zu den Fotos zu scrollen, aber, och menno, so ist es doch viel netter, hab ich recht?
Und nein, darin war natürlich keine Einladung zur Hochzeit von Kate & Will...was will ich da auch, nö, viel besser: mein Doll Quilt, genäht von Lynne (Lily's Quilts).


 Inside were the most wonderful doll quilt. You know I like circles...and yes, I love the Pips...they're so cute! When Lynne presented the quilt (I want to have a door like that!) in the flickr pool of the group she wrote that it was an angel quilt for someone whose partner had to pull out for personal reasons. I am informed that it were fantastic news and I'm so glad Lynne offered to step into the breach.

I bet, if this picture hadn't slipped my attention, I'd probably known it was for me...maybe.

 Im Päckchen war, wie gesagt, ein total schöner Doll Quilt. Ich liebe Kreise und jupp, ebenso die 'Pips'...ich find die nach wie vor einfach nur süß! Als Lynne die ersten Fotos davon in den Flickr Pool der Swap Gruppe eingestellt hat, schrieb sie dazu, dass es ein Angel Quilt sei, d. h. ein Ersatz-Quilt für jemanden, der seinen ursprünglichen Quilt aus welchen Gründen auch immer nicht bekommen kann. Ich weiß inzwischen, dass meine ursprüngliche Partnerin aus persönlichen (wundervollen) Gründen doch nicht mitmachen konnte und ich freue mich so darüber, dass Lynne angeboten hat, einen Quilt für mich zu machen...zusätzlich zu dem ihrer eigenen Swap-Partnerin!

 The quilt is one of my (? THE!) favourites of the swap and it definitely had my name on it! Little did I know that it actually HAD my name on it (of course, I didn't want to think my partner that I'd rather wanted an angel quilt than hers :) )

Isn't the label cool? It's the (modified) header I made for Lynne based on an Orla Kiely design...she even added an OK notebook!!! {I have to come up with a good way to use it...just adding my scribblings doesn't seem to do it justice}

Der Quilt ist einer meiner (? DER) Favoriten des Swaps und ich finde, es war definitiv ein 'Julia-Quilt'. Naja, dass schließlich tatsächlich mein Name drauf stand, hätte ich dann irgendwie doch nicht gedacht.
Ist das Label nicht cool? Es ist der (modifizierte) Header, den ich für Lynnes Blog nach einem Orla Kiely Design entworfen habe...und genau deswegen hat sie mir noch ein OK Notizbuch mitgeschickt!!
{Ich überlege schon die ganze Zeit, womit ich es würdig füllen kann :)}

Everything was so thoughtfully chosen...even the card.

Because Lynne chose to ask me to help her with the blog design after she had seen one of my headers...showing 'magically vanishing' macarons.

 Bis hin zur Karte hat Lynne alles mit liebevoller Sorgfalt für mich ausgesucht. Die Macaroons/Macarons deswegen, weil mein Macaron-Header der Auslöser für unsere kleine kreative Zusammenarbeit war.



And here are all the swap goodies...everything and more. Because there also was a Union Jack table runner/dish towel (as I'm using mine interchangeably, I can never tell which is which - sorry)!

Und hier alle Geschenke zusammen...{mein Sccccchhhhhhaattzzzzz...öhm...ja...genau}. Alles und noch ein bisschen mehr, denn ein kleiner Union Jack Tischläufer/Geschirrhandtuch war auch dabei (so ganz kann ich den Unterschied nie ausmachen...je nachdem, wie's aussieht, benutze ich beide für die jeweils andere Gelegenheit).

Doll Quilt Swap 10 ~ making the quilt

I promised I had several things to show...let's begin with the doll quilt I made for the swap and sent off on March, 31st ~ just in time {I don't know whether I should let you know that I worked on this till the very last hour...at 4.30 a.m. on Thursday I put on the last stitches to it...*sigh*}

From the day I got my partner, I couldn't wait to start with my quilt ~ if only I could have decided on one of the ideas I had! She provided plenty of information of what she liked, and many of them were my cup of tea!

Of course I started secretly stalking her blog & flickr stream...

Ich habe ja gesagt, dass ich noch einiges zeigen muss...fangen wir einfach mal mit dem Doll Quilt an, den ich für den DQS10 Swap genäht habe und schon am 31. März termingerecht abgeschickt habe {ich frage mich, ob ich Euch verraten sollte, dass ich es - mal wieder - nur auf den letzten Drücker geschafft habe...die letzte Naht habe ich um 4.30 am Donnerstag genäht...*seufz*}

Gleich, als ich meine Partnerin zugelost bekommen hab, wollte ich eigentlich loslegen ~ hätte ich mich denn für eine der Ideen entscheiden können, die mir meine grauen Zellen sofort eingeflüstert haben! Sie, also meine Partnerin, hat netterweise ganz viele Informationen über ihre Vorlieben verraten, und das tolle ist/war, dass die meisten davon auch meinem Geschmack entsprechen!

Natürlich habe ich angefangen, heimlich ihren Blog & Flickr Photostream zu "stalken"...

 At least the fabric descision was easy :).

 And eventually, I decided to leave the safe (for me) path and try something new (not as in 'never seen before', but something I had not tried yet)... I wanted to piece set-in-circles, add some nice accents with texture, don't follow a grid for placing the blocks and i wanted to work with a limited, mostly dark grey palette with some splashes of colour.

Und irgendwann habe ich mich dann auch für eine Idee entschieden - und zwar die, die ein bisschen abseits dessen lag, was ich sonst so nähen würde, und mit der ich ein paar neue Dinge ausprobieren könnte (also 'neu' im Sinne von 'neu für mich')...ich wollte gepiecete (nicht applizierte) Kreise ausprobieren, Biesen für etwas mehr Struktur, ausnahmsweise mal keinem Gittter für die Platzierung der einzelnen Blöcke folgen und ich wollte mal mit einer reduzierten, hauptsächlich dunkelgrauen Farbpalette arbeiten, natürlich nicht ohne den einen oder anderen Farbkleks.

You can bet I was nervous, because I used my precious 'Neptune' (and 'Parisville') fabrics.

And of course, the first set-in circle was a complete disaster. To keep it real, I show you the mess I produced (mind you, this was after trying to fit the inner circle 3 times!):

Ihr könnt Euch vielleicht denken, dass ich etwas nervös war, meine 'Neptune' (und 'Parisville') Stoffe zu verwenden - und zu verunstalten. Genau das ist nämlich mit einigen der so motiviert angefangenen Kreise passiert. Hier ist ein Foto eines der misslungenen Kreise - nach drei Versuchen, den inneren Kreis einzupassen!:

The next day, finally not panicking anymore (thanks, Lynne, for being such a great swap mama!), I tried yet again.

And this time, it actually worked!

 Aber am nächsten Tag hatte ich mich dann wieder soweit beruhigt, dass ich einen neuen Versuch starten konnte.

Und diesmal hat es dann auch geklappt!

So I went on and made double pleats (starting with a 10" x 10" square it ended up about half the original size).

Also konnte ich weiter machen mit den doppelten Biesen (das 10"x10" Quadrat ist am ende auf die Hälfte geschrumpft - hat sich aber gelohnt, wie ich finde).

Oh, and I conquered my aversion of paper piecing...you know, I'm a big fan of Union Jacks, so I took Lynne's tutorial and shrinked it to half its size, so the result was about 5 1/2 "...and, well, circular.

Oh, und ich habe meine Aversion gegen Paper Piecing überwunden...ich bin ein erklärter Union Jack fan (naja, zumindest die stoffliche Variante), daher habe ich Lynne's UJ-Vorlage genommen und sie auf etwa die Hälfte verkleinert, so dass der UJ am Ende etwa 5 1/2" groß war...naja, und rund.

 And this is what I made of all the pieces (and you won't believe it, but the biggest circle - that should have been the easiest - caused the most problems. I cheated a bit and topstitched one seam to the inner circle).

Und das ist das Ergebnis (glaubt es oder nicht, aber der ganz große Kreis hat die meisten Probleme bereitet - irgendwann habe ich gemogelt und einfach den äußeren auf den inneren Kreis-Teil aufgesteppt als das Teil schon auf Vlies und Rückseitenstoff lag).

I machine quilted it with more or less straight lines. In the upper left part I tried to loosen it a bit up by quilting irregular circles, reminiscence of topographic lines.

Gequiltet habe ich mit der Maschine in mehr oder weniger geraden linien. Um die Strenge etwas aufzulockern, habe ich den linken Kreisbereich in unregelmäßigen Kreisen gequiltet, die ein bisschen an Höhenlinien erinnern sollen.

Of course there had to be a tiny extra... how about a tiny embroidery hoop showcasing some favourite fabrics (I embroidered her name on it with perle cotton, but as she hasn't got her parcel yet, I erased it).

Natürlich musste noch ein kleines Extra her...wie wäre es mit einem Stickrahmen mit einem Lieblingsstoff? Ich habe den Namen meiner Swap-Partnerin mit Perlgarn aufgestickt, aber da sie das Päckchen noch nicht bekommen hat, hab ich natürlich hier weggepixelt.

I had so many tiny scraps left, and 'Neptune' fabrics aren't to be thrown away...so I made my first stitched card to accompany the quilt. I have to say, I like it :).

 Durch die Kreise hatte ich ganz viele Reste übrig...und da man 'Neptune' nicht einfach wegschmeißt, habe ich auf eine Karte ein paar der Reste aufgenäht.  Mir gefällt's :).

Finally, this stack started its long way to its recipient. Let's hope it will arrive soon & safely! And I so hope that my swap partner will like it...I made everything with her in my mind (although I loved it myself, too). And I've learned so much sewing & planning this quilt...I'm glad I didn't took the easy route!

 Der Doll Quilt und die kleinen Beigaben sind nun seit mehr als einer Woche auf dem langen Weg zu meiner Swap Partnerin. Hoffen wir mal, er kommt bald und sicher dort an! Und natürlich hoffe ich, dass meiner Partnerin der Quilt gefällt. Ich habe zumindest versucht, alles auf ihren Geschmack abzustimmen...naja, und auf meinen auch. Gelernt habe ich beim Nähen auch viel Neues - ich bin froh, dass ich den (für mich) nicht ganz so einfachen Weg gewählt habe...Herausforderung muss schließlich auch mal sein!

Some Sunday Progress

In the last two weeks I haven't touched my sewing machine except for some dusting. Partly, because I was so exhausted from work...and partly because I had a serious March hangover.

Hangovers are there to be overcome and this has to be done actively, so even though I was more than tired, I have sewn some seams on Wednesday...

On Thursday I cut out all pieces for 1 'Single Girl' ring and pieced a test quarter.

 In den letzten zwei Wochen habe ich meine Nähmaschine so gut wie gar nicht angefasst - ausgenommen natürlich die Entfernung der lästigen Wollmäuse, die sich in unbeobachteten Momenten wie....Mäuse eben vermehren. Zum einen, weil ich nach der Arbeit einfach mal nur noch komatös auf der Couch rumlümmeln konnte, zum anderen, weil ich an einem schweren Fall von März-Kater habe.

Aber so ein Tief macht keinen Spaß und es hilft ja nix, man muss sich selbst daraus schieben und ziehen...also habe ich trotz Sandmann im Nacken am Mittwoch ein paar Nähte genäht...

 Am Donnerstag habe ich alle Teile für 1 'Single Girl' Ring zugeschnitten und habe ein Test-Viertel genäht.

And finally settled on the fabrics for the Doll Quilt Swap 10 on Friday, although I haven't solved my dilemma ~ I've 2 ideas which are completely different in design & "feel". One is quite cute & whimsical and more objective, while the other is abstract and more "adult-y". At the moment, I tend towards the latter, because this is more challenging, new techniques to try, while the first idea would be perfect, because there's a lot of "me" in the design.

I'm sorry I can't show you the particular sketches, because I think they're quite specific and I don't want my partner to find out right now :).

Und schließlich hab ich mich am Freitag mit mir (hehe, nach langer Diskussion) auf eine Stoffauswahl für den Doll Quilt Swap 10 geeinigt, wobei mein Dilemma bezüglich des Quiltdesigns nach wie vor besteht ~ ich habe 2 konkrete Ideen, die sehr unterschiedlich sind. Die eine ist eher verspielt, niedlich und eher gegenständlich, während die andere Design-Idee abstrakt und "erwachsen" ist. Momentan tendiere ich zur letzteren, da sie mich doch mehr fordert & ich Neues ausprobieren kann, obwohl die andere Idee (niedlich!) sehr gut zu mir passt...

Tut mir leid, wenn ich hier nur kryptische Andeutungen mache, aber wenn ich meine Skizzen zeigen würde, wüsste meine Swap-Partnerin sofort, dass ich für sie nähe :).

{Ich habe mich auch mal am Blog-Button-Designen versucht, das Ergebnis hat es immerhin auf den 3. Platz beim Wettbewerb gebracht:}

Anyways, in order to make it easier for our partners we were ask not only to list our likes & dislikes, but also to create a mosaic of our favourites.

I really had a hard time doing this, because I like each of the 1,357 tagged pictures!

But as the mosaic maker only permits 36 photos at once, I had to narrow it down...here it is:
