Secret Birthday projects revealed

Now that the birthday pressies are delivered to their respective recipients I can show you my last OPAM finishes for July - which are also some of my CGCG...

First the pinboard I made for my sister's *mumblemumble-tienth* birthday. I used the Tilda fabrics she likes and played a bit with them. After making the picture I ripped out the bag on the right, re-made them, this time without the unintended wonky-ness, and re-attached it with embroidery floss...*sigh*

Second, the bags I made for my my oldest friend (we met when I was 4) and my oldest play mate (we met when I was just born...she's my sister, if you didn't already guessed). I made them each an Amy Butler 'Birdie Sling' with IKEA fabric. I thought it would be good to use sturdier fabric first as I wasn't sure about the right interfacing...well, next time I try more lightweight fabric because the topstitching wasn't actually fun to do. I like the result - the bags look differently because I centered different motifs of the design.  As to the pattern: the instructions are very clear and easy to follow. The only thing I didn't like was the 3/8" seam allowance...but only because 1/4" is more convenient to sew with (I know the reason for a bigger seam allowance..but it is so much more easier to sew with the 1/4" foot).
I'm still amazed by the size of the bags. If I'll sew one for myself I'll probably shorten this bag. It's a bit odd when the bag is nearly as big as one who carries the bag. Good, that the birthday girls are much taller than me ;o). Anyways, I already picked the fabrics I want to use - Joel Dewberry's 'Deer Valley'. Just love that deer print...sometimes you need some kitsch ;o) and the red&aqua color combination won me over...

Before I made the 'Birdie Slings' I practised my bag-making skills with an easy free bag pattern found online, the 'Phoebe Bag' by Rebecca Lambert of artsy crafty babe. It's a nice bag - but next time I'll try using a much stiffer batting/interfacing so the bag will stand alone... Until now, no recipient claimed this one...maybe I can keep this one, but it's handy to have a finished gift on hand when needed so I'm not sure about that ;o).

* This post was written in advance. If I haven't answered to your comment yet, please bear with me, as there's much going on here with cake baking, party preparations, partying, gift wrapping,...*

Wishing you a wonderful weekend,
Julia

  2. Very sweet pin board. LOVE Ikea fabrics. I have a bin full of some I've collected. With some of the prints being so BIG perhaps the birdie sling is a good one to show off the prints. Your bags are fantastic.
